Anxious, Nervous and Timid Dogs

Do you wonder why your dog is timid? Unfortunately, fearfulness and anxiety are quite common behavioural problems. Some cases are genetic, studies show that the mother dogs personality passes on and fearful mother dogs produce fearful offspring. However, unfortunately, most timid dogs are created by the very people who really wanted the best for their dogs. Vets tell us to avoid taking the puppy out before the last vaccination at 16 weeks of age. If you Followed this advice, you missed out on the crucial early socialisation. Unfortunately, it is often the breeders and the first dog owners that create this debilitating problem due to lack of positive socialisation within the first 16 weeks of age.

Positive socialisation early on is crucial.

Socialisation with different situations, environments, people, dogs and animals is so crucially important that it almost outweighs all other considerations. Lack of early socialisation is the most common contributing factor in creating fearful, anxious and timid dogs. The Fear of infections and diseases has led breeders and owners to make the tragic mistake of keeping their puppies isolated until they have completed their vaccinations. However, your puppy can mix with people and other vaccinated dogs from the day they are born. Not having had all the vaccinations should not be a reason to skip early socialisation.

  • And a Lot More!

Over 90% of all cases of dog aggression are fear-based.

The breeder should play a vital part in this early socialisation by socialising the puppies during the first 8 weeks of their lives. They should be inviting different types of people to handle their puppies at a very young age, introduce the pups to healthy and well-behaved dogs, other animals, objects, sounds, handling and situations. Puppies learn important communication skills, bite inhibition and body language from the play with other young puppies or dogs, that’s why puppy classes are important early on. Older dogs do not usually play as puppies do, therefore puppy classes that allow the pups to play together are absolutely crucial to your pup’s future confidence and mental health.
