Scent Games Part 2

Scent games in Dog Behaviour Training Sydney

Did you know that sometimes a solution to canine behaviour issues is as simple as offering them more mental stimulation? Boredom can cause a range of problems like obsessive barking and chewing. Dog behaviour training isn’t only about solving issues but also preventing them. Scent games are an easy way to offer more mental stimulation!

New Animal Scent

Dogs are born trackers. In the wild they would track food, other animals and packs in their territory. So using an animal scent is a natural way of playing with your dog.

To begin, give an old towel to a friend and have him rub it all over his dog or cat. You can also purchase different animal scents to play with. Then, place the cloth out of sight somewhere in the yard, beneath a bush or behind a tree. Let your dog out and see what happens!

Hide & Seek

Play hide and seek with your dog! While your dog is distracted somewhere in the home, hide and wait.  She will inevitably begin searching for you. Once she finds you, praise and reward!

You can take this game to outdoors to a dog-friendly off-leash area. Have a friend hold your dog, then walk off into the woods and find cover. Your friend should wait 30 seconds and then release your dog. Praise her for finding you!
