I’m a puppy school teacher in Sydney, running puppy schools in Leichhardt, Marrickville and Newtown. Every once in awhile I get asked why a puppy is acting up. This is never the case. Dogs don’t have a theory of mind so they don’t plan their actions ahead just to annoy you. But there is a problem – and it’s a lack of follow through!
Rules and Boundaries
Dogs need rules, just like us. The problem with puppy training is that they are so cute we very often let the little things go…When we really shouldn’t. Set rules for your puppy from day one – and follow through! This will make your life a lot easier! For example, when your puppy bites you the next time, instead of thinking it as a puppy bite, imagine your dog doing it as an adult. Because that’s what you are teaching him to do. Is it the type of behaviour you really want to reinforce? Everything your puppy is learning to do as a puppy will continue to happen when he grows up. Keep this in mind when creating rules and boundaries for your new pup!
