Puppy Training – Handling Is Important

Help Your Puppy Associate Human Touch with Positive Things

Advice from Eazy Dog Training Puppy School Inner West Sydney.

One of the most important aspects of puppy training is handling. We need to touch our dogs throughout their lives to check their eyes, teeth, ears etc. and they don’t always like it that much. You can hardly blame them; most of the time we only touch them when there’s a problem and pain involved.

You can make handling your dog a lot easier if you teach her as a pup that human touch means good things.

This is basic classical conditioning.

Begin by pairing non-invasive touches to your puppy with delicious treats. Start somewhere non-threatening, perhaps with a touch to the paw. Touch-treat. Touch-treat. Look for her eyes to light up when you touch her. She might even lift her paw for you to touch it. It tells you she understands that the touch makes treats happen.

When this happens consistently, move your touch to other parts of her body that she might be less comfortable with. If she pulls away from you, you have proceeded too quickly; back up and go more slowly.

This process is invaluable, and will help you with everything from nail trimming to grooming to treating injuries.

Puppy school is a great way top ensure proper socialisation. And no, I don’t mean dog play.
