Eazy Dog Training – Puppy Trainer Sydney
Puppy School Can Be Over-Whelming & That’s ok!
Puppy school is crucial early socialisation for pups, it’s very important for them to learn that there are strange dogs in the world and it’s completely fine. However, puppy school can be quite over-whelming, especially the first lesson when everything is brand new. And this is completely normal and ok. Here’s some more information from your puppy trainer in Sydney.
We can not protect our new puppy from stress if we want a nice, friendly, social and confident dog.
Especially if your puppy is naturally more shy and sensitive, it means that we do need to push them outside their comfort zone a bit, otherwise they would choose not to – and lack crucial socialisation! So showing sterss signs or calming signals, sometimes even fear signs can happen in puppy school, it’s all normal and gives us a better idea of the socialisation needs and training that we need to focus on. The whole idea of puppy school is to build confidence.
Our puppy’s natural reaction is to protect themselves and stay away from new things, because they can be harmful.
This is why socialisation, getting used to everything in our human world, is so important. We are working againts their natural instincs! So even tho we want to do it gradually and avoid stressing the pup out too much too soon, we can not fully control it or avoid stress. Avoidance causes problems later on, it’s not helping the pup in the long run.
In puppy school we can instroduce our new pup to new things in a controlled manner. Nothing makes me happier than see all the puppies playing with each other at the end of the class, even the timid ones that might have been fearful of other pups first! In an ideal world we would do this one by one, introducing one friendly dog at a time and introducing a lot of them (100) within the first 16 weeks. Unfortunately this is not realistic, and most people can’t do socialisation like this. This is why a puppy school is such a great thing to do! It avoids the issues caused by lack of socialisation early on.
