Puppy Socialisation Training Games to Play with Your Puppy PART 2
5. Handle It
Staying calm while been handled is one of the basic skills required from any dog. And it’s very important aspect of puppy socialisation training. There will be times when a vet has to do a check up, you must cut out a matt or administer medicine, so teaching your puppy to relax and enjoy handling is crucial. Get tasty treats. Touch his ear and give him a treat. Touch his other ear and give him a treat again. Touch a paw and give another treat. Examine his teeth and give a few treats at once. Make sure to touch your puppy everywhere, hold their paws for awhile, check their eyes, ears and teeth etc. Always reward with treats and you’ll have a dog who’s happy to be handled in no time.
6. Sit for Petting
Is your puppy jumping on people? Teach him a strong sit command, and then only pet your puppy when he’s sitting. Make this a rule for your puppy and don’t allow other people to pat him either unless he’s sitting.
7. Bath Time
Washing your dog doesn’t have to be a struggle when you start your puppy socialisation training early on. Start teaching your puppy to stay calm while getting a bath by using treats. Put your puppy in the tub or sink, if he’s small enough. Give him a couple of treats. Turn on the water and give him treats again. Wet one of his legs and give him a treat. Repeat like this until the whole puppy is wet. Then give him a nice rub with the soap before rinsing. Give lots of treats when you are done. Take your time and your puppy will learn to love bath time.
8. Out on the Town
It’s very important to take your puppy to different places to expose him to different environments. Always bring treats with you and ensure positive experiences so that your puppy has a good time. Take him to different stores that allow dogs, like book stores. Take your puppy to visit friends who have friendly, safe, healthy and calm dog playmates. But make sure their dogs like puppies first, as not all dogs do. Take your puppy to work with you if you can. Or to a school to socialise with kids. The more places and situations you positively expose your puppy to, the more confident they become and less scary the world will be for them later on.
