Advice from a dog trainer who runs puppy schools in Leichhardt!
Ok, your puppy is finally home. To achieve best training results, you should start training your puppy right away.
Whether you train your new puppy yourself, or sign up for puppy school, some basic rules should take place right away. Here are some useful training tips!
Training Tips from Puppy Schools in Leichhardt:
Choose your dog’s name wisely and be respectful of it.
For training purposes, it helps to consider a short name ending with a strong consonant. This allows you to say his name so that he can always hear it clearly.
And remember to associate your puppy’s new name with pleasant, fun things. This way he will never ignore his name!
Decide on the “house rules.”
Before bringing your puppy home, decide what he can and can’t do. Is he allowed on the bed or the furniture? Are parts of the house off limits? Where will he sleep? If the rules are settled on from day one, you can prevent bad unwanted behaviours and avoid confusion for both of you.
Set up his puppy pen.
If you want to avoid separation anxiety you better start teaching your puppy independence right away. Your puppy will benefit from short periods left alone in the comfort and safety of his own “den”. Reward him if he remains relaxed and quiet. Puppy pen is also a valuable tool for toilet training.
Teach him to come when called.
Teaching him to come back to you is the most important command to teach. Get on his level and call his name. If he reacts to it and start moving towards you, make a big deal using positive reinforcement like treats or play.
