Not Everyone Adores Your Puppy

If you have ever owned a puppy you know how people can go crazy when they meet you on the street. Many people simply can not resist a tiny little puppy walking towards them and they want to greet and give cuddles or introduce their own dog. Most of us adore pups, that’s just a reality. But not every person adores your puppy. And not every dog wants to hang out with your pup either. This is something we learn about in my puppy classes in Sydney. Here’s a story of what I saw today in Sydney Park.

Always Check if It’s Ok to Meet

I was at the park today with my dog and witnessed a very common situation. There were 5 dogs around due the time of day and hot weather. None of them were playing or interacting with each other. Two of them, mine included were focused on a game with their owner and the rest three of them were with their owner sitting in the shade. A big puppy showed up on lead, pulling in a very excited manner towards my dog. My dog doesn’t care about other dogs, she doesn’t go to the park top play, she’s a working dog and focused on me most of the time. Of course the owner let the dog off thinking that it’s a good idea to let the puppy chase mine while mine was chasing a frisbee. Not a god idea in general, most dogs don’t share their own toys with strangers so it could easily cause a fight. My dog was fine though, she just starting running away from the pup trying to get rid of it. And she succeeded.

The puppy then noticed the three dogs and ran up to them starting to harass those dogs. When I say harass, I mean behaviour that the other dogs weren’t enjoying. The owner of those dogs ended up having to lift one of them high above his head to avoid a fight and was trying to get his kids to chase the puppy away. This whole time the puppy owner was near by and looking at the situation walking very slowly towards the pup. She had no intension of stopping the puppy and the other owner had to tell her off.

Off Lead Park Doesn’t Mean that Every Dog or Person Wants to Socialise with Your Dog

Unfortunately there are a lot of dogs out there with very little control. This should not be the case. An off leash park doesn’t mean that your dog is allowed to harass other dogs – or people ( I also saw a beagle trying to eat someone’s picnic). Off leash areas are for well behaved dogs that are under control at all times. This is not rocket science, every dog can be trained to be obedient. It just takes time and effort. So if you own a dog like the puppy in this story, don’t wait any longer, book in for an obedience training class and start teaching your dog better manners.
