Advice from a professional dog trainer in Sydney.
Imagine this: your dog starts to bark at another dog outside and you tell him what a bad dog he is by repeating a word “no”. Did your dog learn not to bark at other dogs when you were yelling him not to? No. First of all, dogs don’t understand English. So your ‘no’ is worthless unless you trained him to understand what it means. Most people don’t. Second of all, if you only corrected your dog, how does he know how to behave in a correct manner the next time? I’ve been working as a professional dog trainer in Sydney for 4 years now and this is a very common situations.
Correction is not enough
Theres one significant difference between professional dog trainers and dog owners. Owners tend to react to things the dog has done that they don’t like. In their minds, this reaction is what might be called training. So yelling ‘no’ to your dog becomes the “training session”. In contrast, professional dog trainers teach dogs how rewarding it is to perform desirable alternative behaviors, instead. So instead of correcting a dog, trainers focus on teaching the dog how to behave in that situation.
