Eazy Dog Training – Your Dog Trainer Inner West Sydney
Teaching your dog to move away from something when asked is an invaluable skill for your daily life. It can even keep you both safe. And it definitely helps you and your dog to reduce stress in overwhelming situations that might otherwise get out of hand! This is something we practise in all of my dog manners and obedience classes in Sydney. If you are looking for a good dog training class to take, I work as a dog trainer in Inner West Sydney and would be happy to help you out.
Walk Away – Training Steps
1. Say “Walk Away” in a cheerful tone and use a treat to lure your dog to follow when you turn the other way. (It helps to turn 180 degrees, to make it clear for your dog that you are changing direction completely.) Practise this until your dog turns away automatically when you say “walk away”.
2. Then start practising with distraction. Place a neutral (not valuable to the dog) object on the ground. Walk your leashed dog toward it, and when he reaches to sniff it, say “Walk Away!” cheerfully and reward him for turning away. Repeat until your dog immediately and happily moves away from the object in response to the vocal cue. Then practice this same step with a variety of neutral objects.
Add Difficulty
When your dog is good at the first two steps, it’s time to make the exercise more difficult!
3. Place a low-value object (something your dog is mildly interested in) on the ground. When your dog sniffs it, say “Walk Away!” and feed treats from your hand as you and your dog move away from the object. Repeat until your dog immediately moves away from the object in response to the cue. Keep practising with different objects, adding the difficulty step by step. Eventually you can even use food on the ground!
