Enable Your Dog to Chew on Designated Chew Objects
Dogs can easily develop preferences. They can develop preferences for their toilet manners, sleeping arrangements, eating etc. And they also develop preferences for certain things to chew on. The rule is, the more often a behaviour happens the more often it will happen! So, for example, the more often your dog chews on your furniture the more often she will do it!
Once again management is the key! You need to manage your dog’s environment using tethers, leashes, gates, exercise pens, and direct supervision so that she has opportunity to chew on only appropriate chew objects. When you provide enough toys, chew objects and bones for your dog to chew on, you will be able to give her house freedom much sooner. And you don’t need to fear for your valuables.
There is a lot to choose from!
Different dogs like different kinds of chews, so you need to learn what are your dog’s favourites. Some dogs chew for the taste, some like to destroy things, some like the sounds that it makes… Try out different things like, different kind of bones (fresh, dried), ears, hooves, antlers, bully sticks, rubber chew toys, rope toys, balls, squeaky toys etc. until you find what your dog likes. Remember that a dog’s need to chew goes far beyond puppyhood, so keep those chew objects handy throughout her life!
If your dog’s chewing has got out of hands and you don’t know what to do, don’t worry.
