Are you getting a Christmas puppy?
Giving a puppy for someone as a Christmas present might not be the best idea but otherwise, Christmas time is great for getting a puppy. Many people have some time off work around the holidays and that can be spent with the new family member.
So, if you have decided to get a puppy for Christmas here is a short list of what they will need!
Your Puppy Needs:
Obedience Training using Positive Reinforcement.
Training should start at a young age. Remember that positive reinforcement is the only training needed for puppies, or any dog for that matter. Try out my online puppy school and continue to basic obedience training!
Puppies need to be crate trained.
And believe me this doesn’t mean locking your dog in a crate. Dogs are den animals and they like to feel safe. Crate can be used for this purpose. Crate training is also great for traveling and emergencies, like a shelter or a vet overnight stay.
Socialisation is very important for puppies.
Puppies need to get used to all types of noise and things, people and other dogs when they are very young. The more they are introduced to in a positive way before 4 months of age, the happier, secure and more confident your puppy will feel when they grow up.
Puppies need a healthy diet for a great start.
Make sure you are feeding your puppy a good, balanced diet. Whether you feed raw food or kibble, it’s important to get started on a high quality food to strengthen their bones, their digestive system and their coats.
Handling the puppy is very important.
Handling is one of the most important things to train. It will help your puppy to stay calm while visiting a vet and they may even learn to enjoy their vet visits. Start practising touching their paws and body everywhere, opening their mouths, looking into their ears etc.
Mental and Physical Exercise is very important for puppies.
Make sure you have enough puzzle toys, Kong/chew toys, treat balls for your puppy every day. And don’t forget that at least one daily walk is crusial for physical exercise. But don’t walk your puppy too far when they are still young. A short walk while you train your puppy to walk on a loose lead is enough.
And Most of All… Don’t forget to be patient and loving in all situations!
