Why Some Dogs Protect Their Food?
Food aggression is a serious issues. And it often results in accidental injuries to both humans and other pets. This kind of aggressive behaviour is called resource guarding. This type of behavioral issue is often found in rescue dogs, but the behavior also pops up in other dogs. It can be caused by a lack of proper training foundation or accidental situation that resulted in losing something important to the dog. Dog Training Sydney can help you prevent and fix aggression over food, toys etc.
What causes food aggression?
Food aggression means that a dog aggressively protects his food. This might include growling, stalking, biting and attacking anything that comes too close to his food. The reason for this behaviour is actually quite simple: dogs have to fight to survive in the wild. Fighting for food is natural for animals. You can’t blame the dog for this. But since we don’t live in the wild, there’s no reason for this behaviour in our human world.
Another reason for this kind of behaviour is that a dog sees us as a threat. Maybe your dog tried to eat something dangerous and you had to take it away. And now you have become a negative thing that takes away nice things.
How to Put an End to Dangerous Food Aggression Behaviours
Positive dog training is the answer. You need to change the way your dog feels about the situation. Turn it into a positive experience instead of a negative one. This can be done by teaching your dog that another dog or person is a good thing rather than a bad thing. If you start giving your dog something better than their own food every time you pass by, they will start seeing you as a good thing and stop protecting their food. I’ve done this with my own dog, and it works!
