SIGNS OF CANINE STRESS
Some dogs are more sensitive to stress than others. And some breeds are more confident and adjustable than others. What might cause stress in one dog will not affect another. Early socialisation in a positive way is one of the most important ways to prevent stress in your dog.
Signs of Stress In Dogs
- Reactivity towards other dogs/people/movement/objects etc. Inability to settle, jumping at the slightest sound or movement.
- Panting, pacing, dilated pupils, sweaty paws, shaking, vocalising excessively, or salivating.
- Stress can show in the form of self calming techniques such as yawning, sneezing, lip licking or intense displacement behaviours such as sniffing, licking, excessive grooming, spinning or self mutilation.
- Urinating or defecating more frequently. Diarrhea.
- Learned helplessness: A dog shuts down and ceases to learn, (often misunderstood as the dog calming down).
- Aggressive behaviour such as growling, snapping or biting can be stress related as well.
