What is a good learning environment for a dog?
Just like us, dogs need a good learning environment to be able to take in all the training. What works for one dog, might not work for another. The ability to learn around distractions depends on a dog, previous training history and your relationship with the dog. But there are situations that are difficult even for the most obedient dogs.
Dog Training Clubs
Dog training in Sydney city is quite easy: Flyball, Agility, Obedience, Rally-O, Nosework… What ever it is that you are interested in, you can find a club for it. Training clubs are great way to meet similar minded friends and train regularly. And they are usually quite cheap, if you are able and willing to travel – most clubs are far away from the city areas. But it might take a while to find a club that suits your purposes. I’ve been a member of three dog training clubs in Sydney, one for obedience and two for agility.
The biggest problem I’ve found in these dog training clubs is that they can be very big.
My obedience class had over 50 dogs training at the same time in the same area. As you can imagine, it’s a very difficult learning environment with all the other dogs and people around. And since managing such large amount of people and dogs can be difficult the training can start repeating itself. I stuck with it for a few months and then stopped due not progressing at all. Every time we focused on the same thing – heeling- for most of the hour training time. I used to compete in obedience and have been a part of a training club before. This experience here in Australia was completely different. It’s hard to imagine anyone been able to compete with that kind of training.
Private Dog Training Classes
I have always done private dog training classes with my dogs. The group sizes are a lot smaller, the trainer is usually experienced professional -instead of a volunteer- and the learning environment a lot calmer. It makes it easier for dogs to focus and learn new things. Yes, they are more expensive, but I think it’s worth the money. And you can usually find private dog trainers that run classes in the city area.
