If you ask me, a professional dog trainer in Sydney of 12 years of dog training experience, one of the most common issues people struggle with their dogs is hyper-activity. An ability to calm down is a skill we can – and should – train and studies show that for some breeds this is particularly difficult such as working breeds, border collies, kelpies and staffies. These are all dogs with problems to control their over-arousal. That’s why practising doing nothing should be on the list of things to focus on early on for every dog owner.
It takes active training to learn to calm down!
Basic obedience classes are great for this skill. Mental exercise is the only way we can really exhaust a dog. Their physical qualities make them great athletes, no matter the breed, so long walks, playtime with other dogs and running can actually reinforce hyper-activity instead of calming a dog down.
