What is the age range for puppies to join my puppy pre-schools?
Your puppy should be between the ages of 8-16 weeks old for the first class and must have had at least one vaccination.
What’s a Good Age for Puppy School?
8-12 Weeks Is the Best Possible Time for Puppy School
A puppy’s most important key developmental period ends around 12 weeks of age. During this very sensitive time, a puppy is more receptive and adaptable to learning new things than they will be later. If you want to raise a confident, social and friendly adult dog, this is the time to book for puppy school. But don’t worry if your pup is older, the important socialisation period lasts until 16 weeks of age!
Unfortunately many breeders and vets without the proper understanding of early socialisation often advice against socialisation or even taking your dog outside at all before the puppy is fully vaccinated. Since this happens at 16 weeks of age, this would mean missing the whole socialisation period. Unfortunately, I have met many puppies that were over-protected by their owners. They are not happy, or normal, dogs anymore. A walk around the block causes them a great deal of stress. If you follow this advice and don’t socialise your pup before 16 weeks of age you will end up with many behavioural issues such as anxiety, nervousness, fearfulness, timidness, anti-social behaviours and even aggression towards other dogs or people.
Why? Studies on canines have taught us that puppies have a sensitive development period that lasts for the first 4 months. And we know now that if a puppy isn’t socialised within the first 4 months they will never be comfortable in unfamiliar environments and situations.

A good learning foundation is crucial for a puppy’s learning
A puppy needs a good learning foundation to grow up to be a confident adult dog. This means proper positive socialisation training. This doesn’t mean dog play. All tho playing is a part of socialisation, it’s not even close to being the most important aspect of it. Socialisation means introducing puppies to the environments and situations they will experience during their lives. This is crucial for them to get used to different situations and to feel good and comfortable about it. Different objects, people, dogs, other animals, surroundings, noises etc. are all things your puppy needs to get used to in a positive way.
Did you know that every experience is stored away in your puppy’s memory affecting their personality? This is a scientific fact. So, it’s the way dogs are raised and the experiences they have, especially as young puppies, that will truly determine their true personality. No matter how confident your pup was when born, this can easily change. The more positive experiences, especially early on, the more confident your dog will be.
Puppies learn all the time…Seriously, all the time!
