What Age Is Good for Puppy School?
All puppies in my classes must be 8-16 weeks of age by the start date of the class and have had at least the first vaccination at 6 weeks of age.
Breeders and vets often advice against socialisation before the puppy is fully vaccinated at 16 weeks of age (to be exact, vets tell you to wait additional two weeks for the vaccine to take full effect) or to at least wait until the second one. This is not necessary! Our puppy school locations are always private, classes are not held in public dog parks and all our spaces are cleaned and sprayed with F10 heavy duty kennel cleaner after each class, the same stuff vets use! So it’s perfectly safe to come and take advantage of the most crucial puppy socialisation period of the first 16 weeks of age.
Why is it best to attend sooner than later? Studies have taught us that if a puppy isn’t socialised well and in a positive way before 16 weeks of age they might never be completely comfortable with new experiences or in new situations. This is a survival instinct inherited from wolves, anything puppies meet positively before 16 weeks of age becomes normal and acceptable. After 16 weeks of age, dogs change and aren’t as adaptable to new situations any more or as welcoming of new experience than they were before.
When can you start training your puppy? Right away! Puppies learn all the time so it’s best to start from day one.
8-12 Weeks Is the Ideal Time for Puppy School
A puppy has a key developmental period that ends around 12 weeks of age. That’s why the first 12 weeks are the most crucial weeks for socialization. If you wish to raise a balanced, friendly, confident and social dog, this is the best time for puppy school. But don’t worry if your pup is older, the 16 weeks of age limit still applies!
