How to Cope with Dogs with Excess Energy, Advice from Your Eazy Dog Trainer in Strathfield!

We all want a dog who is happy and excited about life, but what happens when a dog has too much energy?

First, we need to think about physical exercise. Sure, we all know dogs need it but are we offering enough of it? The most out of control dogs me and my trainer meet aren’t walked regularly. They usually only get a walk or two per week. This is not enough, no matter how big your yard is. Dogs need a few walks every day, one longer and one or two shorter ones to stave off boredom and unwanted behaviours caused by it. Requirements for physical exercise vary with age, breed, and physical condition, but in general, if you have a healthy, active breed you will need to provide the minimum of one hour of exercise per day, ideally more! is

Running and playing also helps. Chasing a ball or romping at a local park can be good. But pay attention to what kind of exercise that is and what is the mental state of your dog. Repetitive exercise such as ball chasing can actually be detrimental to dogs and can contribute to chronic stress, increasing restless behaviours. This is based on physiological reactions to high energy endeavours. Levels of adrenalin and other stress chemicals may stay elevated for days following bouts of intense exercise, and long-term activation of the stress-response system can be detrimental. If you find that your hyperactive dog is turning into a super athlete try changing the type of exercise you’re providing. Over-arousal activities can increase over-excitement and unwanted behaviours and is not good for your dog. You must find a balance between high-arousal activities and calming exercise.

Dog sports are another great way to burn energy!

Agility, flyball, dock jumping, disc dog, lure coursing, nose work, tracking, basic obedience and rally O are just some of the options out there. Any of these sports will engage your dog physically and mentally and will go a long way toward tiring him out.

Mental stimulation is also crucial!

There are a lot of really great interactive dog toys out there to get your dog to use their brain during the day. One very easy way to do this is to feed your dog’s meals from a treat dispenser. Dog puzzles, Kong toys etc. go along way towards exhausting your dog – and are also calming! And don’t forget chewing!

The last form of mental stimulation that must be mentioned is training.

Training does wonders to your dog’s overall behaviours and can not be recommended highly enough!
