Puppy Whining and Crying, What to Do?
Before getting a puppy, it is important to know what behaviours to expect. Whining and crying is very common puppy behaviour. It’s natural way of communicating for young pups. How much a puppy cries and whines depends on the puppy. It is very important that puppies stay with their mothers for at least the first eight weeks of life. If someone is trying to sell you a puppy younger than that, don’t fall for it! You’re not dealing with a good breeder and could be faced with raising a puppy that did not receive critical teaching and information from its mother and siblings. I’ve seen it with my own eyes that puppies that are separated from their mums too early develop anxieties.
When getting a puppy you are likely to face at least a little whining or crying.
This is due the adjustment of leaving their mother and siblings.
How to Stop Puppy Whining and Crying
- Ignore the whining. Never reward your puppy with attention or play until she is quiet for at least several seconds.
- A tired puppy is a quiet puppy. Short intervals of training and exercise can significantly help reduce whining and crying.
- Teach your puppy independence. Don’t spend every second of every day with your puppy. This will only increase whining and crying when alone. Start leaving your pup alone right away, for short times
