Teaching Your Dog “Place”
Teaching a dog to go and lie down at one place is something we trainers call “stationing”. It is simply asking a dog to stay still in a specific spot. The spot can be a mat, a dog bed or a crate, and you can send a dog there with the cue “Go to your place.”
Lie Down On A Bed.
Send a dog to a bed, mat, blanket or crate happens for many reasons. One of the most common is when people come to the door; this form of stationing positions the dog away from the door and helps her remain calm when visitors come in. It’s usefull in other exiting situations too.
Start by rewarding this behaviour with high-quality treats at a high rate of reinforcement. We need to build value in staying on that spot. This can seem as if you are rewarding the dog for doing nothing but in fact, you are rewarding calmness. When the dog seems calm and likes to stay on the specific spot you are using, start adding duration and distance, one at a time. Either change the rate of reinforcement by adding duration or start practising stepping away from the dog while they stay on the place. Only reward for staying on it.
