HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT PUPPY?
Congratulations, you’ve decided to get a puppy! It’s going to be amazing… But also challenging! And choosing the right puppy is as important as raising them. So don’t take it lightly. Early experiences affect your puppy’s personality so it’s important to think about where you are getting a puppy from. Also, it’s important to see the puppies and their environment before making a decision to purchase one. And that’s not all, you also need to choose the right breed for your lifestyle. Here’s advice from your local dog trainer in North Bondi.
What’s your breed?
Choosing a breed that works with your lifestyle is the most important factor to consider. Are you active? Or enjoy lying on the couch? Are you planning to train or even compete? Do you like the idea of constant grooming maintenance? Do you want a dog who doesn’t bark? Do you want your dog to be friendly and social? Different breeds have different qualities, choose the one that suits you!
Do some research and choose a responsible breeder.
If you have decided to go with a pure bred dog, choosing a good breeder is very important. Ask questions like; what is the environment like for the pups: are they with the family or separated outside? What kind of socialisation do they get within the first 8 weeks? How many litters do they have per year (avoid puppy mills!). Ask to see the health tests for the parents. Compare and choose carefully! And don’t forget to go see the breeder and their dogs before hand!
What To Look For In A Puppy
When you go see the pups, spend time observing them and watch they interact with each other, adult dogs and people around them. Some puppies are very playful and brave, some timid and shy. Remember that the more sensitive ones need special attention when it comes to socialisation training. Choose a pup that suits your own personality!
