Training Technique: Catching Behaviour
There are many different dog training techniques. One of the easiest force-free ways to train your dog is by ‘catching’ him in the act of the behaviour. The concept of catching a behavior training is that you identify and reward behaviours or actions that your dog performs without a cue from you or anyone else. What gets rewarded, happens more often! Here’s advice from your local dog trainer in Moore Park on how to teach ‘si’t using catching.
How to Catch a Behavior
- Wait for your dog to sit on his own, and immediately give a verbal marker like ‘yes!’ (or a click from a clicker) followed by a reward.
- Once your dog is consistently sitting, say the word ‘sit’ as he is in the action of sitting.
- Continue catching your dog in the act of the behaviour (when he’s sitting) and eventually your dog will begin to voluntarily perform the behaviour in order to receive a reward.
The beauty of this training technique is that it encourages the dog to think and problem-solve, which is great mental stimulation!
