Have you decided to get a puppy?
Great, your life will become much happier! But before you run off to choose your new family member, there are a few things you need to study. Here are my tips to focus on, from a dog trainer’s point of view. And if you still feel like you would benefit from professional help, you can always contact your dog trainer in Leichhardt and Inner West area!
Canine Behaviour
This goes without saying, but let’s say it anyway: dogs aren’t people and puppies aren’t babies. Dogs are animals, canines, and they have their own way of communicating and behaving. So the first thing to study about is canine behaviour so that you’ll know what to expect when you welcome a dog into your life.
Breed Matters
The next thing to focus on is the breed. Dogs have been bred for centuries to have specific qualities and temperaments that work for the purposes we need them for. Some breeds are more social than others, some breeds are naturally more timid and so on. So, if you have a breed in mind, do your homework and study it. The main thing to focus on is the negative things about that breed, would you be willing to live with them? If not, choose a different breed!
Your Own Dog’s Personality
The last thing we need to learn to understand is our puppy’s personality. If you have chosen a great breeder, they will listen to your needs and lifestyle and choose a puppy best suited for you. Otherwise there’s very little you can do about it before bringing him home. Spend time with your puppy, socialising and training, to really get to know him. You’ll learn how confident or sensitive your puppy is, whether they like rough play or calmer dogs to socialise with and so on. It’s very important to understand what kind of personality your dog is to know what you need to focus on, training and socialisation wise.
