What Is Shaping in Dog Training? Advice from Your Dog Trainer All Sydney
Shaping is a dog training method that gradually teaches a dog a new action or behaviour by rewarding him during each step of the behaviour. Using shaping to train your dog, it’s good to break up a complicated action into smaller parts. This way your dog will learn and understand it more quickly. I personally use shaping a lot. If you are interested in learning how to do it yourself, you can book a class with me. Your dog trainer all Sydney.
Getting Started With Shaping – Start with the First Step
The idea of shaping is to start with a very first action needed for the behaviour and gradually build up to the whole desired action.
For example, how to shape fetch:
- Start with rewarding your dog for touching the ball with his nose.
- Once your dog has learnt to touch the ball with his nose, start rewarding him for touching the ball on the ground. When this is learnt, reward for touching the ball on the ground after you have thrown it a short distance.
- Gradually build up the action until your dog follows the ball, takes it in his mouth and brings it back to you.
And remember, shaping will take time! But with time, patience, and right timing, you can teach your dog to do anything through shaping!
