How to Ensure Reliable Obedience
Is your dog an angel at home and a monster outside? It is very common that dogs are very well behaved at home but out of control outside. And believe it or not, it’s not the dog’s fault. If your dog struggles to listen to you outside you haven’t finished your training. Actually, you’ve forgotten the most important step of training a dog: distraction training. It’s very important for proofing your commands and ensuring that your dog obeys outside home as well. But don’t worry, I have a great game for you to play with your dog that will help to improve obedience. Here’s advice from your dog behaviourist in Sydney!
Mix It Up!
Dogs are situational learners. This means that the learn to associate certain situations with certain results and behaviours. For example, most dogs that love going to the park to play with other dogs will learn to focus only on that. And that’s how you lose the control of your dog at the park. To fix this, mix it up! Start asking your dog to sit randomly on your walks. Or practise your recall at the park before playtime. You can also ask your dog to lie down in front of the front door instead of the old sit. You can practise tricks at the park instead of the old walk routine. Make your dog guess what might happen next! This will increase your value and change the way they associate those situations. Your dog will learn to focus on you better!
