Do You Have a Dog Who Reacts Badly to Other Dogs or People?
Dog reactivity is quite common, but what causes it? Here’s advice from Canine Behaviourist Sydney.
There are many different reasons for reactivity towards other dogs or people. The most common ones are lack of socialisation when young, bad experiences and frustration due over-excitement. These are the most common issues I notice in dogs that I train. Whether the reactivity can be completely fixed depends on how long it’s been going on and how severe it is.
Lack of socialisation is the hardest case of these three.
Why? Because it means that the dog never learnt to be around other dogs and there’s a very high chance that they don’t want it anymore. I personally think that there’s no point trying to force a dog to like other dogs if they were never socialised as young puppies. You’d be fighting against their natural reaction. This would be very difficult and chances of succeeding very low. Instead, focus on keeping your dog comfortable around other dogs.
Bad experiences and over-excitement are a little bit easier to train
It simply means creating a positive association with other dogs and teaching calmer manners.
