14TH DAY

Work on leaving your dog alone for a few minutes

Do you ever stop by at a cafe and leave your dog to wait outside? Is your dog calm and happy about it? Unfortunately, I see unhappy and anxious dogs waiting for their owners almost every time I walk past a cafe. Anxiety isn’t a nice feeling. It feels just as bad as if you were suffering from it. So before leaving your dog alone to wait for you, you need to teach your dog to trust you to come back. And be happy about being alone for awhile.

Start your training at home
  1. Give your dog a yummy treat or kong toy with peanut butter in it and step out of the room for a second.
  2. Gradually, start adding duration and a vocal cue ‘wait’.
  3. When your dog is fine on his own at home, start practising outside.
  4. Tether your dog to a pole or anything you can find outside. Give your dog a treat, say ‘wait’ and step a few steps away from him. Make sure not to give any attention to your dog, you can even turn your back towards him. If he’s calm about it, step back and reward your dog with another treat.
  5. Start adding duration and distance gradually.
  6. When your dog can stay calm even when you are far away or stay away for a few minutes, start practising hiding.
  7. Tether your dog somewhere where you can easily step out of sight. Start practising stepping out of sight for a second and returning to reward your dog.
  8. Start adding duration out of sight. When this is going well, you can try a cafe!
