Training your dog ensures good manners.
Life can be a lot easier with a dog that has polite greeting manners, walks nicely on the leash and comes back to you when called. But dog training has other benefits as well.
1. A well-trained dog is a joy to both you and your dog
You will enjoy your daily life with a well mannered pooch! Your dog will be welcome in far more places and situations if they know how to behave.
2. Dog training is great mental and physical exercise
Wild dogs, and other animals, spend most of their time hunting and looking for food. The rest of the day is spent resting. Modern dogs don’t have to do that and that’s why they can develop unwanted behaviours caused by boredom. Dog training is a great way to offer mental stimulation and physical exercise for your dog!
3. Socialisation with people and other dogs
Our human society has placed an unrealistic expectation on dogs. We need them to be friendly, or at least tolerant, to every person and dog they meet.
Dog training is an important element in the socialisation of your puppy. A well-socialised dog is able to calmly acknowledge other people and dogs, and accept interaction from them.
4. Bond with your dog
Your bonding process with your dog begins as soon as you bring them home. With a young puppy the process can be very quick, but if you have rescued an adult dog, it might take longer.
Training strengthens the partnership and enriches the relationship with your dog.
5. Keep your dog safe
A reliable recall means that your dog comes immediately when you call them. This means coming to you anywhere, anytime and in any situation. It’s important for managing your dog’s behaviour but it might also save your dog’s life. A trained dog can run around in the off-leash dog park while you have verbal control.
6. Foundation for dog sports
Basic obedience training provides the foundation for any activity you want your dog to do. It’s very important when it comes to any dog sports. There is something for every dog in Australia. You could try agility, rally-obedience, dancing with your dog, tracking, search & rescue, nose work, treiball and many others.
