How to Stop Barking?

Do you think your dog just loves the sound of his own voice?

Some breeds are naturally more prone to barking, but there is often a reason why your dog is being noisy. Management is the key for success when you start top fix this issue. Join my adult dog classes to get professional help!

Does your dog want something?

Sometimes barking is attention seeking behaviour. They bark because it’s rewarding. If your dog barks to go outside and you let him out, you’ve just rewarded him for barking. If he barks while you prepare his dinner and you give him his food, you just rewarded him for barking. Don’t accidentally reward your dog for behaviour you don’t want!

Is he frightened?

Most canine aggression and reactivity is actually based on fear. A fearful dog barks to try and scare “the scary thing” away.

Is your dog territorial?

Does your dog bark at people and other dogs who pass by your house or car? If so, your dog might be territorial.

Dogs can also bark in greeting because they are over-excited or/and frustrated

This is quite common with dogs that socialise with other dogs all the time. You need to calm down the situations!

Here are a few ways to stop the barking:

Ignore the barking

This can be hard! But it works especially with attention barking. Only pay attention to your dog when he’s quiet!

Remove the trigger

If your dog is being territorial, you need to block his view of the things that trigger his barking. Close the curtains or blinds, or confine your dog to another area of the house where he can’t see his triggers. The more often your dog gets a chance to bark the more often he will bark!

Help your dog be more comfortable
If your dog is fearful, contact your local dog trainer to help you turn a negative situation into a positive one! Or take part in adult dog classes!

Teach him to do something else
Choose a behaviour you prefer and teach your dog to do that instead of barking.
