CHOOSING THE RIGHT BREEDER – PUPPY TRAINING SYDNEY ADVICE

Buying a puppy from a responsible breeder is always a good idea. But what is responsible breeding? And why is it so important? It’s critical to your puppy’s early development that you find a breeder who sincerely cares about the puppies. This doesn’t mean just loving puppies, most people do! A good breeder doesn’t only understand canine behaviour and their own breed but also the importance of early socialisation. Here are some tips about how to get a puppy from the right breeder.

Never buy a puppy from a pet store!

It’s a known fact that pet store puppies aren’t from responsible breeders. They are from puppy mills. Puppy mill is a kennel focused on producing as many puppies as possible at all times. This means lack of socialisation, physical exercise and mental stimulation for the poor dogs. The mum dogs have no other purpose but to be a puppy factory. This means living in a small cage without anything to stimulate them. If you care about dogs, never support this kind of business! And, this isn’t a good start to a puppy’s life at all!

How To Identify a Responsible Breeder

A breeder who breeds for health and temperament before cash will always:

  • Show you the parents – or the very least the mother – of the puppy you are looking at. The parents should be healthy, clean, and friendly. Pay attention to the temperament of the parents!
  • Show you proof of health screening on all their dogs and puppies. This means health screening done on the dogs (eye checks, elbow/hip score etc.). This is very important if your desired breed has known genetic issues.
  • Give you the puppy when they are at least 8 weeks old. The puppy is vaccinated already once. Puppy is also free of worms.
  • Be concerned about the dog’s welfare throughout its life. You should be asked a lot of questions about your life style and required to sign a contract. The breeder should be willing to take the dog back or help you find a new home if you need to re-home the dog for any reason.
A good breeder would never:
  • Have a massive number of dogs and puppies on their property.
  • Wean puppies prior to eight weeks old. This is very important for the development of the puppies. And not just for their health but also mentally. Separation anxiety for example can start early on if the pups are separated from their mums before they are naturally ready for it!
