So, You’ve decided to get a puppy… But do you know how to pick the right puppy?

Bringing a puppy into your home is a 15-20 year commitment, so it’s important to think it through…and to choose the right puppy for you!

What To Look For In A Puppy

First you need to decide on the breed. There are literally hundreds of options. Think about your own lifestyle: are you active or not? Do you want to spend time and money on grooming? Do you want a social and friendly dog who gets along with other dogs?

When you have chosen your breed, it’s time to choose your pup!

When you go see puppies, look for a puppy that is actively seeking out your attention and does not seem overly shy or wary of you. Some people are naturally drawn to puppies that are boisterous and playful while others tend to go toward the shy or timid ones. Remember, that the decision you make will impact your life in many different ways. Take your time and try and see past the puppyhood. Timid puppies might continue to exhibit shyness as they grow and this could develop into fear as an adult that can be difficult to manage. And the boisterous ones could develop over-excitement issues, which can be challenging to manage if you don’t start early on!

Spend time observing the puppies

Watch how they interact with each other, adult dogs and people around them. Encourage them to come to you and see if they like interaction. Pay attention to the behaviours that you would like to see in your own puppy…and the ones you don’t like!

Do some research before committing

Spend time talking to shelter staff or the breeder to get a better idea of behaviour and how the pup you like behaves. Is he playful? Does he bully the other dogs during play or does he have good manners? Is he vocal? These are all things you should observe before making a decision because it’s you who has to live with it all for a long time.

And don’t forget, puppies should never come home with you before they are at least 8 weeks old!
