The Story of Eazy Dog Training Sydney- How Did I Become a Dog Trainer in Sydney?

This is Elmer, my very first dog – And the reason why I’m a dog trainer in Sydney today!

How Was Eazy Dog Training Sydney Born

I’ve been training dogs for over 10 years now and I’ve been running my own Eazy Dog Training Sydney business from 2017.  Let me tell you my story and how I became a dog trainer.

It all started in 2009 when I got my first dog in Finland. I had always wanted a dog, and begged my parents to get one, so when I was 20 years old I finally decided that it was time to get my first dog. I chose a breed called Coton De Tulear for their loveable temperament and small size. And I read a lot of books of dogs and this breed to prepare myself. Little did I know that it would be a rocky road.

Unfortunately with my first dog I was focused on experiences, not on the quality of them. I knew that socialisation was important so I took my dog everywhere and used to go to the dog park a lot. That’s where my dog started getting bad experiences with other dogs.

Bad Experiences Shape Your Dog’s Personality

My dog was attacked by other dogs 6 times. Most of these happened on lead, on a walk, when someone’s aggressive dog pulled their way to us. Unfortunately, I used to be the type who allowed my dog to greet other dogs on our walks. Now I know better and don’t do this anymore but back then I didn’t know any better. And this caused my dog to become aggressive towards any dogs in sight.

Not Understanding Dogs Can Cause Problems

My first dog had every problem you could imagine. It took me a year to toilet train him, he was obsessive with humping other dogs, he had bad separation anxiety, he was sensitive to sounds and would react to anything sudden he heard… The list goes on and on. Back then I used to think that dogs are dogs and can sort out their own issues. I know now that all these could have been avoided. But due all these issues I was forced to study dogs and focus on training him. He really is the reason why I understand dogs so well today. I just had to learn the hard way.

Through out all the issues I had with my first dog, I was always focused on obedience training and this dog was a competition level dog. When we trained or were in a trial, his behaviour changed completely, he was focused and ignored everything else. This made me realise how important basic obedience really is. It can help dogs to learn new better behaviours. So I knew that it was only a matter of time and effort to fix his behaviours outside obedience ring.

Competition Level Obedience Training

From early on, I got really into obedience training. I competed with both of my dogs, after I got a second one a few years later. At my best, I trained my dogs in different training groups a few times per week, every week for a long time. I also started agility training. While training my own dogs, I continued to learn from the trainers in our training groups and learnt many different training techniques, some better than others. I attended many training seminars and also started running obedience classes myself. This is what shaped me as a trainer. Learning from other trainers is one of the most important phases every trainer should go through. That’s why I always say that a dog trainer who doesn’t train their own dog, isn’t worth your time!

Becoming a Dog Trainer

I have always been interested in dog training and have trained my own dogs a lot. Whether it’s tricks, obedience, agility, blood tracking or dog shows, I’ve done it all. In 2012 I saw an ad for a 6 month dog training course run by a private dog training business in Finland. I booked in and graduated top of my class. And I’ve been training dogs professionally ever since.

I’ve been running puppy schools and obedience classes and offered private dog training in Sydney from 2015, first through other businesses. In 2017 I finally started my own dog training business and I could’t be happier. Eazy Dog Training Sydney offers obedience and manners classes, puppy schools and agility training in Sydney. I also offer in-home dog training in all Sydney areas.
