Rules for Dog Park Visits

Are you taking your dog to dog parks often? Does your dog lose all focus there?

I live right next to Sydney Park and go there every day. And every day I see situations where the owners have very little to none control of their dogs. Just yesterday I saw an owner trying to stop his dog from taking off to the big, busy road next to them. Why does this happen? Why do dogs het so excited and lose focus?

Everything is Learnt

Dogs learn all the time, not just when trained. And they learn through associating things with certain results. So, what ever your dog is doing, it’s learnt behaviour. This is why we focus on learning new behaviours at my dog manners classes in Sydney. Let’s go through examples of what a dog might learn at the park.

1. You have no control over him

This applies to every untrained dog who is let off the lead at a big dog par. They learn that they have a lot of space to run around and that you have very little control over them when they aren’t on lead. These kind of dogs run away from their owners when it’s time to go home, run up to every dog and person, eats and takes what ever they can when ever they want. Just yesterday I saw one of these type of dogs eating someone else’s picnic. This is not okey. Every dog should have polite manners. The issue with these dogs is lack of training. Before letting your dog off lead, focus on basic obedience and impulse control!

2. Park is for free play with other dogs -only!

Some dogs are taken to the park all the time to play with other dogs. These type of owners usually stand around while the dogs are going crazy around them. What a dog learns in this situation is that the park is for him to play with other dogs with. The owner becomes less and less important. This leads up to a dog who ignores you at the park…Because you have become boring. All the other dogs are the stimulation, entertainment and fun around. You are just the boring person taking him home. This can be fixed by associating the park with other things as well, such as training and calm time with you.
