For us, our sense of smell can give us a general idea of what’s going on. But for dogs, their sense of smell can give them a very detailed analysis of what has happened. By sniffing they learn who has been there, even weather changes or if there are any threats they should be aware of. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?
Sniffing is a mental exercise
Sniffing is also a great form mental exercise. However, it doesn’t meant that you should let your dog take charge and control of the walk! Finding a balance between stopping to sniff and continuing to walk is important. Not every walk needs to be filled with non-stop sniffing, but it is an important part of dogs’ communication with one another.
