Why Do Dogs Sniff? – Puppy Class Inner West Sydney

Have You Ever Wondered Why Do Dogs Sniff?

Eazy Dog Training Runs a Puppy Class in Inner West Sydney

Dogs sniff a lot when outside. And unfortunately we often have other things to do and can’t stand around all day while our dog smells every pole and grass area in the park! However, sniffing is very important for dogs. It’s a very important way dogs experience the world around them.

For us, our sense of smell can give us a general idea of what’s going on. But for dogs, their sense of smell can give them a very detailed analysis of what has happened. By sniffing they learn who has been there, even weather changes or if there are any threats they should be aware of. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?

Sniffing is a mental exercise

Sniffing is also a great form mental exercise. However, it doesn’t meant that you should let your dog take charge and control of the walk! Finding a balance between stopping to sniff and continuing to walk is important. Not every walk needs to be filled with non-stop sniffing, but it is an important part of dogs’ communication with one another.
