How to Become an Effective Dog Owner
Anniina has 10 years of experience as a dog trainer. Now she runs Eazy Dog Training in Sydney, offering both group classes and private dog training in Inner West Sydney.
Be proactive.
For many people, dog training is focused on waiting for the dog to make a mistake and then correcting him. But this method doesn’t teach the dog what he is supposed to do in that situation the next time. And even worse, it gives you a negative spin!
It doesn’t make sense to let an untrained dog loose, following and correcting him with “No! Don’t! Off! Stop! Get down!” for every wrong decision he makes. It is much more effective and productive to take the time to teach your new puppy how to act appropriately.
Begin with the end in mind.
To change an unwanted behaviour, you first need to decide what you want your dog to do instead. If you don’t have a desired behaviour in mind and you’re only focused on stopping a behavior, your dog will never learn what he’s supposed to do the next time. This will set up an endless cycle of wrong behavior and corrections.
First things first.
Prioritizing is a necessity in all aspects of our lives, training your dog is no exception. There might be several things you wish to change or work on with your dog, but certain ones should take precedent. Focusing on too many things at the same time might be too confusing for the both of you. Focus on teaching your dog the behaviours that meet your immediate needs first.
