Is your puppy chewing everything in sight?
Here’s advice on Dog Manners Training Sydney
First, we need to remember that chewing is normal for a puppy. Puppies chew when they’re teething because their gums get itchy. But puppies also chew to explore their world and because it’s fun. That’s why management is the key aspect of raising a puppy.
Management
A puppy should never be left unsupervised in your house. If you do so, it creates an oppurtunity to learn bad habits because no one is watching the puppy. So, when ever you can’t keep an eye on the puppy, confine him into a smaller area, like a puppy pen, with only good options around. A puppy pen should be covered with puppy pee mats and have lots of toys and things to chew.
Make sure not to leave anything a puppy could accidentally chew and destroy on the floor or anywhere your puppy could get it from. Preventing bad habits is easier than fixing them!
When ever your puppy tries to chew a wrong thing, take it away and offer a toy instead.
Bones are also a great way to get your puppy chew the right things. They are delicious so it’s more likely he’ll choose it over your shoes or chairs.
Puppy Biting
I’ve been doing dog manners training in Sydney for years, and there’s one thing I want to set right. There’s no such thing as puppy biting. It’s simply a puppy that bites. If you allow this behaviour, you’ll end up with an adult dog doing the same thing…with a lot more force! I’ve experienced this countless of times when I get called to help with a biting adult dog.
When your puppy chews on you, cry out a high pitched squeal and turn away and completely ignore him for a count of ten. Then turn back around and give him one of his toys. Praise him for chewing on that!
