5 Steps to Speedy Recall! – Dog Manners Class

Have you ever consider using a whistle? Now is the time!

There are many ways to practise recall skills. Using a whistle for your recall is a great way to ensure your dog hears you every time. In my dog manners class we practise the more common ways to get your dog to come back to you, but here’s advice how to do it using a whistle.

Buy a whistle.

A dog’s hearing range is far better than ours and is far more sensitive to high frequency sounds. Dog whistles are designed to produce the greatest response from your dog, even over long distances.

Step 1

Every time you feed your dog a meal, blow a few short blasts on the whistle. Very quickly, she will start to associate the whistle with food.

Step 2

After a few days of associating the whistle with food, try blowing it before you put the food down.

Step 3

Practise recall: use a delicious treat and choose a time when meals aren’t usually on order. Try blowing those same three blasts on the whistle. Praise and treat your dog if she runs to you. Then you can start moving this game outside in your own yard. Have treats ready on hand!

Step 4

Finally, after a few weeks of practise, take it to the dog park!
