Dog Training in Sydney is a real jungle!
There are many ways for people to learn the principles of dog training
You can take an online training course, learn by doing it yourself or participate in a practical course. However, due to the lack of regulation in the industry, there are many people who call themselves dog trainers (or animal behaviorists) with no education or experience whatsoever. As a professional, certified dog trainer myself with 10 yo of experience, I find experience to be the most important thing when choosing a trainer. You might know dog training principles in writing, but doing it is completely different.
How to find a good dog trainer in Sydney then?
Finding a good dog trainer can be very difficult. You can of course ask around, or check their recommendations. All tho as a person who has owned 2 businesses over the years, I know how hard it is to get people to give you a review, so it might not be the best indicator. People tend to be more eager to give negative reviews rather than positive ones. So a lack of negative ones itself is a good sign. And of course you can ask for their certificate.
But the most important question to ask is: do you have a dog and if so, what kind of training have you done? If a trainer doesn’t have a dog or doesn’t train their own dog, how can you trust them to be able to train other people’s dogs?
I’ve learnt the best by training my own dogs
I’ve trained my own dogs for years. I’ve been regularly participating in training groups trained by other trainers for the last 8 years. This has taught me many different training techniques and shown me dog training in practise. At my best, I’ve been a part of 3 different training groups per week. I’ve done basic obedience trials, agility, dog shows and tracking. I would still love to do rally-o. But right now I don’t have time for it.
I’ve met many dog trainers in Sydney who don’t have a dog or have never trained their own dog. This is not good.
