What should you train your new puppy?
Training tips from a puppy school in Annandale!
Reward his good behavior.
Always reward your puppy’s good behavior with positive reinforcement, like treats. You can use treats, toys, cuddles, or heaps of excited praise. Let him know when’s he’s getting it right. And remember, never reward bad behaviour, like jumping up by giving your puppy attention. It’ll only reinforce the behaviour.
Take care of the jump up.
Puppies love to jump up when greeting us. Ignore jumping up and wait ’til he settles down before giving any positive reinforcement, like pats. Never encourage jumping behavior by patting or praising your dog when he’s jumping up. Simply turn your back on him and pay him no attention.
Discourage him from biting or nipping.
Best way to stop biting is to pretend that you’re in great pain when he’s biting or nipping you. He’ll be so surprised he’s likely to stop immediately. If this doesn’t work, try offering a chew toy instead. If all else fails, break up the biting behavior, and then just ignore him.
End training sessions on a positive note.
Always end every training session on a positive note. Training should always be fun and rewarding! This guarantees he’ll show up at his next training session with his tail wagging and happy to work!
