WHAT DOES POSITIVE DOG TRAINING MEAN?

Positive dog training means using training methods that are based on rewarding your dog for good behaviour.

The Three Pillars of Positive Training

  • The use of positive reinforcement in a form of treats, play, toys, attention, cuddles etc.
  • Avoiding the use of intimidation, physical punishment or fear. This means avoiding any harmful training devices as well, like prong collars.
  • A commitment to understanding the canine experience from the dog’s point of view

Positive Reinforcement

Using positive reinforcement to change a dog’s behaviour is scientifically proven to be the most effective and long-lasting method in dog training.

In short, positive reinforcement means that if you reward a behavior you like, there is a better chance of that behavior being repeated. This can be paired with negative punishment which means the removal or withholding of something the dog wants. A vocal correction sound can also be used to redirect negative behaviour. These three elements are the foundation of positive dog training.

Avoidance of Punitive Methods

Scientific studies have taught us that punitive training techniques on dogs don’t work long term. In fact, harsh methods are more likely to make already aggressive dogs even more aggressive. Violence creates violence, even in dog world.

Dog’s Point of View

When we train animals, we need to understand how they perceive the world around them. We can’t use human concepts or expect a dog to understand them or the world the same way we do. So, it’s up to us to learn to ‘talk dog’.

Dogs are driven by their senses. And these senses are closely linked to emotions. Therefore, we can use their senses to help dogs learn and to work through any behavioral issues. This process is called sensory education.

Finding a good dog trainer has never been more difficult than it is today. There are still a lot of old school dominance and punishment-based trainers out there.

I do not use choke or prong collars, head collars etc. or accept or recommend using them. And I do not believe in the old-fashioned pack leadership. I do believe in pack behaviour but I don’t think our dogs are ever trying to ‘take over’ the leadership from us.

My experience as a dog trainer is that most of the issues dogs have are caused by our lack of understanding regarding dog behaviour. In fact, something small can easily become a big issue over time. When you know the reason behind a particular behaviour, positive training methods can alter the behaviour in a dog-friendly way.
