Positive Training Foundation with Positive Dog Training

A Positive Training Foundation Creates an Obedient Dog

– Advice from a Positive Canine Trainer in Sydney –

There was a time, 20 years or so ago, when force-free training was a new training method to the dog world. (Can you believe it?) Back then, positive dog trainers had to endure criticism about using treats for training. Now that studies have taught us that force-free training is faster and more effective than old-fashioned force-based methods, there is no need to be defensive about using food rewards. Positive dog training should be the foundation of your “house of training”!

I always have treats or my dog’s favourite toy in my pocket so that I can train my dog anytime. My walks always include both physical and mental exercise! And I can always use treats to reinforce my dog’s behaviour when the opportunity presents itself.

A good thing to understand is that all living creatures, us included, repeat behaviours that are reinforced. We all want to do what benefits us! If you reinforce the behaviors you want with treats or something else your dog loves, and make sure your puppy doesn’t get reinforced for behaviors you don’t want – there’s that “management” thing again- your dog will start offering behaviours you want. It’s as simple as that! Good news right?
