17TH DAY
Teach your dog a new trick
Teach your dog a new trick like holding something or backing up. Remember to use high value treats for training, like cheese or chicken. Keep repeating your new skill a few times per day for a few weeks to ensure a reliable command.
Holding an item
STEP 1
Start with an item or toy your dog loves to carry in his mouth. If your dog loves tug of war, use a toy you use for that. The idea is to use an item your dog would love to “bite”.
STEP 2
Offer the item to your dog by placing it in front of him. If he tries to take it or even moves towards it, reward with a high value treat. Try to get to a point where your dog is taking the item in his mouth, and reward.
STEP 3
When your dog is offering a good “bite” (taking the item), start adding a vocal cue “take”. Use the vocal cue ‘take’ when your dog is putting his mouth around the toy. He needs to connect ‘biting’ with the vocal cue.
STEP 4
Next, lay the item on the ground and repeat the command, rewarding him when he does.
