13TH DAY

Dog agility training

Get out into nature, or the closest you can, like a big park. Think of how mentally stimulating nature is for dogs, and for you as well. All the sights, smells and walking are good mental and physical exercise for the both of you.

Unfortunately, a walk isn’t always as easy as it sounds. It is very often the most exciting and stimulating part of your dog’s day, and for many dogs it’s the only activity they get during the day. So the desire to pull and push ahead can be very strong. This is why a leash can become frustrating for a dog. It’s no wonder so many people struggle with lead manners! But it doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying nice walks with your dog.

Recall – the ability to have your dog come back to you when called- is by far the most important and often the most difficult command to train.

A reliable recall means that your dog will choose to come to you every time when called.

Why is a reliable recall difficult to train? Why won’t dogs just come when called?

The key to understanding this is to look at the situation from the dog’s point of view. The most common situation where we call our dog is on a walk when the dog is off-lead. This is often the most exciting part of their day with many different things to see and experience. There are other dogs to play with, people, birds, smells etc. around them and the freedom to roam where ever they want to. Would you choose to be on lead instead?
