Unfortunately separation anxiety is one of the most difficult behaviour problems to deal with because it can quickly develop into a deeply rooted issue which is very difficult to change. The problem with separation anxiety in dogs is that it happens when we aren’t there so it’s difficult to train and manage. But knowing how to do it is the key! And the good news is that in most cases we are dealing with separation issues – the dog simply hasn’t learnt to cope alone yet – instead of clinical anxiety. And I’m here to tell you that separation anxiety is treatable!
A dog’s separation anxiety has been defined as anxiety and distress in the absence of an attachment figure.
Separation anxiety in dogs is a common behavioural issue that affects many dogs, often causing significant distress for both the dog and the owner. Whether you’ve noticed your dog exhibiting signs of anxiety when you leave the house, or you’re concerned about how your dog behaves when you’re not around, it’s important to understand what separation anxiety is, what the signs are, and how to manage it effectively.
Separation anxiety is a condition where a dog experiences stress and anxiety when separated from their primary caregiver or when left alone. When these dogs are left alone or separated from their owners, they can become overwhelmed by feelings of fear and uncertainty, which may manifest in destructive or stressful behaviours.
While mild separation-related distress (like whining when you leave) is not uncommon, true separation anxiety can cause a dog to react in ways that are harmful to themselves, their environment, and their relationship with you.
Separation anxiety can be incredibly challenging for both you and your dog, but with patience and consistency, it’s possible to help your dog feel more comfortable being alone.
With my help and following my online training course designed for dogs suffering from separation anxiety you can start your journey towards decreasing your dogs anxiety and helping them to cope alone.
And the best part is that I’ve already done it with my own dog. So I know it works!
Each week you’ll have access to education, step-by-step training videos, useful tips, fact sheets, self-assessments and coursework you can send to me to stay on track of your training! And you can ask questions in our live Q&A sessions on Mondays from 7pm to 8pm.
