Enrichment Ideas for Dogs
Dogs require enrichment on a daily basis to feel happy and stay mentally healthy. The more active the breed/dog, the more important this is but every dog no matter the size, age or breed requires mental stimulation. I myself own two border collies so I know the enrichment requirement for active dogs very well, for example, mine get a fresh bone every single day! And guess what? Mine are calm and very well-behaved dogs! Enrichment and mental stimulation also promote calmness which is what most dog owners want from their dogs. It can be a bit confusing tho to know what kind of enrichment to offer, so here are some great examples:
- Fresh/dehydrated bones/chews such as bully stick (I love fresh beef marrow bones!)
- Interactive treat toys such as Kong, Kong Wobbler/Gyro/Shell
- Treat puzzles such as Nina Ottoson’s toys
- Licky mat
- Snuffle mat
- Cardboard boxes/paper rolls/towel with treats in it
- Cardboard box full of toys, drop kibble in it to create your own puzzle toy!
- Scatter feeding on the ground inside/outside
- Searching for hidden treats/toys (start with your dog’s favourite toy!)
- Obedience training
- Trick training
- Nosework
- Dog sports such as agility, flyball, frisbee catching
- Target training: Teach your dog to touch things with paws or nose
- Body awareness exercises such as stepping on things (big rocks, for example outside), weaving your legs etc.
- Handling exercises such as sending the dog to go around trees, sending them forward etc.
- Long walks in new environments while sniffing (no dog play if you wish to reinforce calmness!)
So next time you’re out and about or thinking of what to do at home, try some of these!
