What to Do When Your Puppy Cries At Night In His Crate
There are many good reasons to crate puppies overnight and the most important is safety. It’s also great for toilet training because puppies are unlikely to soil in their crate, and if they wake in the night the crate stops them finding somewhere in the house to toilet. But where to put the crate?
The best place to put the crate overnight is within an ear shot from your own sleeping area. This makes it easier for you to hear if your puppy needs a potty break. Your presence can be comforting, so you might want to start in your bedroom. However, the change from there to elsewhere can be very difficult, so I always recommend starting in the area where you want your dog to sleep as an adult too.
The First Night
Coming to live in your house is a big transition for your puppy and it’s normal to have some issues on the first few nights. There will be crying and whining to some extend, that’s given, no matter where your puppy sleeps. Help your puppy feel positive by creating a safe and nice place for them in the crate. Make sure to put toys in it and use a kong toy with a little bit of something delicious in it to build a positive association with staying in the crate.
When your puppy cries, take him straight outside in case he needs to potty. Carry him to prevent accidents en route. Then put your puppy back in the crate, don’t cuddle or play or do anything else but a quick toilet break and then back into the crate.
For toilet training purposes, take your puppy out to potty every two hours and reward him for toileting outside. If he is sleeping, you don’t need to disturb him, wait for him to wake up on his own. Some puppies can sleep for several hours at night right away!
