How To Teach A Dog To Come?
Name Calling Is the Foundation
Every dog should respond to their own name!
1. Whenever you’re training something new, start at home first. Sit with your dog and say his name and give your puppy a treat immediately. He doesn’t have to do anything yet, not even look at you! Just repeat the name and give a treat. Easy!
2. Drop a treat on the floor near you. As soon as your puppy finishes eating the treat on the ground, say his name again. When he looks up, give him another treat and excited praise. Repeat this a couple of times and begin tossing the treat a little further away. Reward with excitement and a treat for looking at you when you say his name! Avoid saying your puppy’s name when they are still focused on the treat, let him finish eating it first. We never want a puppy to learn to ignore their name!
3. Once your puppy will turn around to face you every time called, begin adding movement and making the game more fun! Toss a treat on the ground and take a few quick steps away while calling your puppy’s name. He should run after you because the chase is fun! When he catches you, give him a lot of praise, treats or playtime. Remember, coming to you should be always fun! Continue building on these games with longer distances and in other locations.
4. When training outside, it may be helpful to keep your puppy on a long leash at first. We don’t want him to learn to take off!
5. When your puppy is coming to you, after you called his name, start adding a vocal cue ‘come’. We need to associate it with the correct action, which in this case is coming to you. Don’t use it too early, when the puppy isn’t yet moving towards you, only use it when he’s already committed to coming to you! Practise this for the next week or so.
6. Check if your dog has associated the word ‘come’ with the right action: simply say come without calling your pup’s name first and see if he starts moving towards you!
