Professional Dog Trainer Inner Sydney : What does it mean to be a responsible dog owner?
Most dog owners know to clean after their dogs on walks. But being a responsible dog owner means more than just picking up poo. It means that you are responsible for everything that your dog does outside. If your dog jumps on children scratching their faces in the process, that’s own you, not your dog. If your dog runs off to a group of people enjoying their picnic eating all the food in sight, it’s on you. And if your dog attacks another dog, it’s on you too, not your dog. These are all examples of dogs I’ve trained. And yes, dogs are animals and therefore they can be unpredictable and sometimes sh*t happens. I get that. But your job as a responsible owner is to prevent and manage your dog’s behaviours. Training and restricting your dog are example of management. Here’s an opinion from your professional Dog Trainer in Inner Sydney.
Freedom Must Be Earned
If you ask me, the problem with out of control behaviours is that most people seem to think that dogs deserve freedom, no matter their behaviour. This is not right. Should a dog who takes off every time a lead comes off be off-lead? Of course not. Should a dog who’s potentially dangerous to other dogs or people be off-leash? Definitely not! This is not rocket science. Dog’s learn through experience and if they get freedom with no boundaries they quickly spiral out of control. Training, especially when started early on, is the easiest way to prevent bad behaviours and teach good ones. And if you choose not to train your dog, keep them under control via management…or leash!
