Does Your Dog Get Too Distracted Outside to Focus on You?
This is a very common problem and the solution is often very simple. You simply aren’t interesting enough. There might be other dogs, people, smells, sights and sounds that are far more interesting. Treats are a great way to get your dog focused on you, but it matters what sort of treats you have. Kibble might work at home, but for most dogs they don’t work outside. Here’s advice from an experienced dog trainer in Sydney.
Use High Value Treats Around Distractions
Using high value rewards is very important when training something new or when outside around distractions. High value treats such cheese or bbq chicken will help getting your dog focused on you. This is particularly important when training reactive dogs not to react to other dogs for example. So, make a list of treats that your dog likes and put them in an order of importance. Use the ones at the top of the list when outside and around distractions.
Using Treats Is a Start, Not the End Result
And just like my many posts before, using treats for the rest of your life isn’t the solution for your problem. It’s the start. When your training is going well and the dog has learnt, you should start reducing treats until you don’t use them at all anymore.
